M & S Country Syrup: A Sweet Southern Tradition

Our M & S Country Syrup is homemade from ingredients on the homestead, and sold during the holiday season as supplies last. The process of making sweet, rich syrup from sugarcane remains very similar to what our founder, Dr. Michael A. Wells, saw as a child when he rode a pony powering the mill his father used for grinding cane. Dr. Wells remembers the “sugar candy” that coated the edge of the boiling syrup, and he still sneaks a few pieces today as he carries on the family’s sweet tradition!

Although Dr. Wells is an educator now, and a motor has replaced the pony-powered mill, M & S Country Syrup is still prepared in much the same way he remembers. These videos provide a glimpse into a process that remains very similar to its origins, with sugarcane being ground and then slowly reducing to delicious syrup.
